For our May screening at Third Coast, we're presenting an episode that has much of the
feel of new Who - cinematic in scope, high action, and a youthful, new Doctor.
Imagine, fans suffering the loss of Tom Baker as the Doctor, faced with a new, relatively unproven actor, Peter Davidson.
Directed by Peter Grimwade and written by Eric Saward, Earthshock helped cement Peter Davison's tenure as the Doctor (although not to the point of hardcore fans asking, "Tom who?"). Cinematic and hard-hitting in execution, this is a story that is a must-view for fans of the show. It took a slightly different take on the franchise, and finalized the shift in tone that the show took under John Nathan-Turner. It's also one of the few times a companion dies in a story, and although we mock this particular passing, the execution is quite moving.
(No, we're not going to spoil it. That's what Wikipedia is for).
